Groceries:

Take eggs, margarine, oil, rice and whatever you like or need.  Remember you are restricted at the border and everything
is available in Inhambane at competitive prices.  You are allowed $50 or (+ R350.00) groceries and meat per person.

It is important to keep the invoices to show at the border.  There are two Indian shops selling groceries if you need any.
They are SHEY which is situated next to the Masaroco Restaurant; these shops also sell liquor and beer.

Bread:

Mozambique bread is made in the Portuguese style and is called Pao.  They sell bread everywhere but there are two bakeries that sell very nice bread.  One is in the same street as Masaroco and Pradip but right on the other end of the road.  The other one is across the road from the town hall.  Local woman come around everyday to the resort selling bread and fruit.

Liquor:

You are allowed to take 1 liter of spirits per person and 3 liters of wine per person.  You are NOT allowed to take beer and cold drinks.  There is plenty of beer and cold drinks available in Mozambique.  Spirits are available at the same prices as in South Africa.  You can buy liquor from all the shops in Inhambane.  There is a bottle store on the corner to the east of the fresh produce market, they stock a lot of South African wine but their spirits are more expensive that the Indian shops.

The cheapest cold drinks are bottles that are bought in crates on which you have to pay a deposit.  There is liquor wholesaler in Inhambane called HANDLING.  It is situated across the road from the Petromoc petrol station in the main road.

Meat:

You are allowed to take meat and groceries to the value of $50 (+R350.00) per person.  A rule of thumb is to take meat
for every second night.  Prawns, crayfish, crab, calamari and fish are available for the rest of the time.  You can buy the
seafood from the locals who come around to the resort or from the fresh produce market in Inhambane.

Take your own scale, as the local scales are not accurate.  A new butchery has opened in Maxixe, it has good quality meat from South Africa, but they are expensive.  You can get meat if you run out, Maxixe is 70 km from Inhambane by road but you can take a water taxi called a Dhow across the estuary, the distance is 4 km.

Health:

This is a Malaria area, please take your malaria medication and medication for small ailments for example Peaceful Sleep, Anti-itch cream, allergic medication and diarrhea medicine as well as sunburn lotion.  It is advisable to burn mosquito coils in the evening.  We have provided mosquito nets for each bed.  It is advisable to take drinking water as the local water may upset your stomach.  There is a hospital in Inhambane as well as a pharmacy.

There are three troublesome insects in Mozambique, they are the following:

1.  Mosquitoes:
There are not a lot of them at Barra.  The reason is because there is no open fresh water.  The only time they
breed is when it rains a lot and they breed in the palm trees.  Please remember that they are the carriers of malaria.
In the morning and evening put on an insect repellant, burn coils and sleep under your mosquito net.

2.  Palm Flies:
They are also known as “white ash”.  They are very small and look like drifting ash.  Please use repellant and take
precaution, and if you see them, move into the cottage.  They do not come inside.

3.  Sand Flees:
When you have been in the sand, wash you feet up to your knees.
Theirs a bucket provided to wash your feet.
Fill it with water a 10ml Detol.  Please take your own Detol.
